Breaking Free from Self-Doubt: How I Took Control of My Confidence

We all experience self-doubt at some point. Whether it’s hesitating to speak up in meetings, questioning your qualifications, or wondering if you’re really capable of achieving your dreams, it’s easy to let these thoughts pull us down.

I spent many younger years battling impostor syndrome, convinced I wasn’t good enough, smart enough, expert enough…. But over time, I realized that these doubts weren’t a reflection of my true abilities—they were heavy limiting beliefs I was carrying with me. And oftentimes messages from others.

Once I learned to let them go, everything changed.

In this post, I’ll share how I transformed my self-doubt into unshakable confidence—and how you can do the same.

I Used to Be Quiet, Afraid of Looking Dumb, and Constantly Trying to Please Everyone
Early in my career, I was consumed by the fear of judgment. I’d keep my thoughts to myself, holding back in meetings because I was afraid of saying something wrong. The fear of appearing "dumb" or "incompetent" kept me small (even despite praise for my presentations at the time). I became overly cautious with my words, but eventually, I realized my ideas were valuable. That fear wasn’t helping me grow—it was keeping me stuck. Once I understood that the fear was a sign of growth, I started to take action against it despite the discomfort.

5 Steps to Build Confidence and Overcome Impostor Syndrome:

  1. Acknowledge Your Fear, Don’t Let It Control You
Fear is a natural part of growth. The key is not to let it dictate your decisions. Instead, see fear as an indicator that you're stepping into something new.
Action Tip: The next time fear creeps in, ask yourself: “What’s one action I can take right now to move past this?”

  2. Seek Out Mentorship and Community
Mentorship and community are crucial for growth. I sought out mentors, built relationships with like-minded individuals, and found groups that helped me rise above my self-doubt.
Action Tip: Look for mentors, coaches or communities that are ahead of where you are, and learn from them. Your growth will be exponential. I worked with many mentors and my own life coach. My life coach completely changed my life - she challenged me in ways no one else did and helped guide me through all of the ups and downs - and I still work with her to this day. She’s a non-negotiable for my growth and headspace.

  3. Set Small, Achievable Goals
Big changes don’t happen overnight, but every single small step forward builds momentum. When I started setting and achieving small goals, my confidence grew with every success.
Action Tip: Break down your big goals into smaller, actionable steps. Celebrate each milestone to stay motivated and build momentum.

  4. Stop People-Pleasing and Start Setting Boundaries
When I started saying "no" to things that didn’t align with my values, I started saying "yes" to myself. Setting boundaries isn’t selfish—it’s empowering.
Action Tip: Identify your non-negotiables (e.g., time for self-care, family, focused work) and set boundaries to protect them. Saying “no” to distractions allows you to say “yes” to what matters most.

  5. Invest in Yourself and Your Growth
I learned that my personal growth wasn’t just a nice-to-have—it was an essential investment. It’s one of the most powerful decisions I ever made, and it continues to pay off in confidence, success, and clarity. Investing in yourself is not just about acquiring new skills—it’s about unlocking the potential within you, elevating your mindset, and paving the way for sustainable success.

One of the most impactful ways I invested in my growth was by working with a coach. What I found was that having a coach didn’t just help me professionally—it completely transformed me, both personally and professionally. It fast-tracked my growth in ways I couldn’t have imagined.

Working with a coach helped me recognize and disempower the limiting beliefs that had been holding me back for years. I had carried around ideas like "I’m not good enough," "I need to be perfect," or "I can’t do this on my own." But with my coach’s guidance, I learned how to identify these negative thought patterns and challenge them. I stopped letting them dictate my decisions and actions.

One of the most powerful things my coach helped me with was learning how to take messy action. I used to wait until I felt "ready" or until the conditions were perfect—but I quickly realized that waiting for perfection kept me stuck. My coach showed me that imperfect action is still action, and it’s often in those messy, imperfect steps that we learn the most. By embracing this, I was able to move forward faster and gain confidence along the way.

Through our work together, I got crystal clear on what I truly wanted, both in my personal life and my career. I was able to connect with my deeper desires and define success on my own terms. This clarity became my guiding light—it made every decision easier, from setting boundaries to saying "no" to things that no longer served me.

Another invaluable benefit was having someone to talk through challenges and roadblocks with. As we all know, the journey to success is never linear—there are bumps along the way. But having a coach meant I had someone to help me navigate those challenges. Instead of getting stuck in frustration or confusion, I could process issues in real time and brainstorm solutions that moved me forward. This not only helped me overcome obstacles faster but also gave me the confidence to handle future challenges with a clearer perspective.

Ultimately, having a coach helped me stay on track. When self-doubt crept in or I started questioning my path, I had someone who was there to remind me of my strengths, my progress, and my bigger vision. With their support, I was able to keep pushing forward, staying focused on the trajectory I was creating for myself.

Investing in a coach isn’t just about having someone to talk to—it’s about having a partner who accelerates your growth, helps you get out of your own way, and holds you accountable to the person you know you’re capable of becoming.

Action Tip: If you’re serious about leveling up and breaking free from your own limiting beliefs, consider working with a coach or investing in a program that provides the structure, accountability, and support you need to accelerate your journey. The investment is worth it—both in terms of what you’ll gain personally and professionally, and in the transformation you’ll experience along the way.

Transforming from self-doubt to confidence wasn’t an overnight change—it was a journey. Each step filled with discomfort, growth, and, most importantly, the trust that I was capable of more. Now, I want to help you do the same.
